Meet Dr. Toups: From the Patient's Chair to Practice Owner

Every dentist has a story about why they chose this work. Dr. Toups's story starts in the one place most kids dread: the dental chair.

The kid in the chair

Growing up in Dothan, Alabama, Margaret Toups spent more hours in a dental chair than just about any kid she knew. Appointment after appointment, she got to know the sounds, the smells, the nerves, and the difference a kind provider makes when you are the one lying back under the light. Most people would have come out of that wanting nothing to do with dentistry ever again.

She came out of it fascinated. She loved science, she loved art, and somewhere in all those visits she realized dentistry is the rare profession that is genuinely both: precise enough to satisfy the scientist, and creative enough that a well-made restoration is something you could fairly call craftsmanship. The kid in the chair decided she wanted to be the one holding the mirror.

The long way to Trussville

The path ran through Mississippi State, where she graduated summa cum laude, and then the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she earned her Doctorate of Dental Medicine in 2017. In 2018 she came to Trussville as an associate dentist, and in May of 2019 she did something bigger than taking a job. She bought the practice, put her name on the door, and moved her family here for good.

That last part is worth sitting with. Plenty of providers commute into a community. Dr. Toups and her husband planted their family in this one. Their three children are in the schools, on the ballfields, and at the recitals. The two of them teach Sunday school at their church just down the road. The people in her waiting room are the same people she sees at the grocery store, the games, and the pew, which is exactly how she likes it. It is much easier to trust a dentist who has to look you in the eye at the ballpark on Saturday.

"I am no different than the patient in the chair"

Ask Dr. Toups to describe how she practices and she will not lead with technology or credentials. She will tell you this: "I am no different than the patient in the chair." She has been the nervous patient. She remembers it. And that memory shows up in a hundred small ways: a laid-back pace, plain-English explanations, no judgment about how long it has been, and a genuine allergy to pressure of any kind.

It is also why her dentistry is so deliberately conservative. She preserves natural tooth structure whenever possible. She watches spots that only need watching instead of drilling them. She starts with the smallest fix that truly solves the problem, and she will tell you plainly when the answer is no treatment at all. In her office, the recommendation you get is the one she would want as the person lying back under the light, because she has been that person.

The sentence that keeps her going

There are two things patients say to Dr. Toups more than anything else. The first, believe it or not, is "I love you." The second is the one she treasures: "I am not afraid of the dentist anymore."

She has a line about that: every good visit is one step closer to erasing the bad ones. For patients who carry old dental fear, that is the whole treatment plan in a sentence. Gentle visits, nitrous oxide when nerves need it, zero lectures, and a little more trust rebuilt every time, for the grown-ups and for the kids she hopes never develop that fear in the first place.
